One of the weeks we are most proud of at Colorado Trails Dude Ranch is our annual Horseman’s Week. The exact dates vary from year to year, but typically it is held in early September. Our Horseman’s Week is a week when our normal dude ranch activities take a back seat, and Colorado Trails Dude Ranch becomes Colorado Trails Horse Ranch. If you’re looking for vacation ideas and you’re an experienced rider or want to learn how to ride, you’ll love our annual horse ranch experience.
Lessons for Novices and Experienced Riders Alike
The basic lessons included in Horseman’s Week include learning how to jog and lope on horseback. There are also private lessons available for riders who want to improve in specific areas. Days feature morning and afternoon rides that last up to 2.5 hours, in which riders concentrate at various points on improving their walking, jogging, and loping skills.
The week will also include a half-day ride that goes from the morning until lunch, and a full day of riding that lasts 6 to 8 hours in the nearby National Forest. Riders bring a pack lunch and eat while on the trail.
Participants in Horseman’s Week at Colorado Trails Dude Ranch also learn how to care for their riding equipment, rider’s first aid, and basic horse care and anatomy. Horseman’s Week is a great primer for anyone who has always wanted to own horses, but didn’t quite know where to start.
Ride Lessons for More Experienced Riders
More experienced riders will also work on other horse care and horse riding techniques, including how to tack a horse, various groundwork techniques to control horses safely, grooming, and arena horseback riding. In the arena, riders will learn how to guide horses through poles, barrels, and the keyhole.
All Inclusive Family Vacations Even During Horseman’s Week
Even during our annual Horseman’s Week, Colorado Trails Dude Ranch still strives to provide fun, all inclusive family vacations that are enjoyable for everyone. If you decide you want to take a break from horseback riding, you can try your hand at trap shooting or do a little fly fishing and still enjoy yourself in the beautiful outdoors in the San Juan Mountains surrounding our ranch. Or if you’d prefer to soak in the hot tub or take a dip in our heated pool, both are lovely after a hard day of riding.
In the evenings, you can enjoy watching a Western movie with other guests, visit the Durango Melodrama in town, or have fun with Horse Jeopardy. In short, there’s always something for everyone at Colorado Trails, making it the most unique and memorable vacation ideas you’ve found in years.
