The Durango Melodrama is a little piece of the Old West that’s still alive and well. At Colorado Trails Dude Ranch, visiting the Durango Melodrama & Vaudeville at the Henry Strater Theatre for one night during their stay is one of our guests’ favorite activities. Here’s a look at what’s on-tap at the Durango Melodrama for the rest of the 2011 season.

“The Pursuit of Happiness”

Set during the American Revolution, this story tells of a Hessian mercenary who wants to surrender to the Americans. He finds the notion of a whole country based upon the “pursuit of happiness” to be an excellent idea. As for him, he would like to pursue the innkeeper’s daughter in particular. Patriotic and fun-loving with plenty of comedy, “The Pursuit of Happiness” is sure to make you laugh.

This melodrama is directed by Robert L. Johnson, a veteran of the Henry Strater Theatre. An actor since 1970, Mr. Johnson has been back in Durango directing shows since 1989.

“After Dark”

Within a Dickensian-style 19th century London, this show has a hero, a beautiful heroine, and plenty of manipulative villains. “After Dark” is a convoluted tale of a lost inheritance and a few mistaken identities, complete with a speeding train rushing towards a potential victim.

“After Dark” is directed by Jenny Fitts Reynolds, who’s been in the acting biz since she was ten years old. She has directed several larger productions inside and outside Durango, including “Pirates of Penzance,” “The Wizard of Oz,” “Grease,” “The Rocky Horror Picture Show,” and “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.”

Both “The Pursuit of Happiness” and “After Dark” will run through September 24, 2011.
