The history of Colorado Trails Ranch is unique in the fact that it was designed to be a guest ranch from the beginning, rather than an adaptation of a traditional ranch. In 1960, two ancient but sturdy buildings stood on the original property; namely, a small barn and an anteroom to a dance hall built in 1912. The anteroom is part of staff housing and the small barn has now been replaced with many new barns.

It started with the construction of a new lodge and six guest cabins in 1960. The following decade brought many more changes to the scenery. The Blacksmith Shop (the original maintenance building, then turned into the tackle shop later on) was the first in 1969. Next came the Trading Post in 1970, a favorite with visitors because that is where they can enjoy old fashioned ice cream sodas and find fun souvenirs. The Ruckus Room was added to the Trading Post later that same year.

Several more buildings were added toward the latter end of the 70s. The Saloon is actually housing for female staff members, and the School House was built for the male members. The addition of the Opera House provided a place where guests could join in square dancing and watch a show. More cabins were also needed to accommodate more visitors.

The most recent additions include new Trex decks for the Office, Trading Post, Ruckus Room, Opera House and Blacksmith Shop and a nice new walkway from the Trading Post to the Opera House. The folks at Colorado Trails want to make positive changes that will make their guests as comfortable as possible. For the new season they are finishing up the replacement of the pool and hot tub, in addition to building two new beautiful cabins.
