horseman's week

September 7–14, 2008

During Horseman’s week, we offer personalized horseback riding instruction for all levels. Whether you’re a beginner who has never ridden before, or own your own horses and want to improve your riding and overall horsemanship skills, this is the week for you! Our staff of experienced and accomplished wranglers is ready to show you everything you want to learn.

Some of what’s offered during your week at our dude ranch includes:

Orientation

  • Learn the basics of riding, and how to safely move around horses
  • Ensure proper match of you and your horse,
  • Make sure you and your saddle fit correctly

Lessons

  • The Jog (how to jog comfortably and correctly)
  • Loping/Cantering (how to lope/canter comfortably and correctly)
  • Private lessons to better your riding in specific areas

Ground work

  • How to catch a horse in a pasture (safely, for you and the horse)
  • Grooming your horse for riding
  • Tacking your horse
  • Lunging & Groundwork (exercising horses on foot to learn how to    control them and work with them in specific areas)

Ride options

  • Morning and afternoon rides (walk, jog, or canter rides, typically one and a half to two and a half hour rides)
  • Half day ride (three to four hour ride, back in time for lunch)
  • All day ride (typically six to eight hour ride into the National Forest, pack a lunch and stop to eat on the trail)
  • Sunrise breakfast ride (ride out early and eat breakfast as you watch the sun rise over the mountains)
  • Cattle drive (learn how to move a herd of longhorn cattle while horseback)
  • Team Penning (work as a team to single out cows from the herd, and move them individually)

Arena work

  • Poles
  • Barrels
  • Keyhole

Miscellaneous instruction

  • Western Tack (descriptions, uses and care)
  • First Aid on the trail
  • Equine and Veterinarian First Aid
  • Equine Nutrition
  • Equine Confirmation and Anatomy

Evening activities

  • Western movies
  • Old fashioned melodrama in town
  • Horse Jeopardy
